Abel's World

When I found out what I wanted to do, I knew it was what I had to do.

When Rory found the opportunity to collaborate with Barefoot Workshops and Delta Magazine, he was excited to shadow a local artist and musician whose work he found captivating. For a week he captured bluesman, potter, and painter Bill Abel, at play and at work.

All it really is is feeling the rhythm and knowing half the notes.
— Abel on the blues

He was surprised at what he found: though Abel plays a raucous blues show, he was at heart a quiet family man. To pull together his photoessay, we knew we had to capture the essence of Bill Abel—and also what Rory had learned from his week. Boyce interviewed both Rory and Abel, and wrote a short essay that accompanies the ten-page spread, accenting the ideas and emotions captured in the photographs.
